The Story Behind the Book
An Evening with the Marquis de Lafayette imagines the unexpected return of the “Hero of Two Worlds” to 21st-century America. Set in LaGrange, Georgia—a city named for the French estate of Lafayette’s wife, Adrienne—this evocative work weaves verifiable history into modern storytelling, exploring how a champion of liberty would view the America of today.
-
Set in modern-day LaGrange, Georgia, An Evening with Lafayette begins when Professor Dean Hamilton encounters a remarkable stranger who claims to be the Marquis de Lafayette. What first seems like an elaborate reenactment soon becomes something far more extraordinary.
As Lafayette joins a gathering of college professors, the evening becomes an unexpected conversation between past and present. Through humor, history, and personal stories, Lafayette reflects on the America he helped create while confronting the world as it exists today.
-
Professor Dean Hamilton is standing near LaGrange’s bronze statue of Lafayette when he encounters a man dressed as an eighteenth-century gentleman who insists that he is the real Marquis de Lafayette.
At first, Dean assumes he has met an exceptionally convincing reenactor. But as the stranger recounts intimate details of Lafayette’s life, the American Revolution, and the people he knew, Dean begins to question what he is witnessing.
Lafayette eventually joins Dean and his fellow professors for an evening of conversation that brings history directly into the present. Their discussions move from the American Revolution and Lafayette’s relationship with the United States to the ideals of liberty, political life, and the changes he encounters in modern America.
Rooted in Lafayette’s letters, life, and historical record, the novel uses this imagined encounter to introduce readers to the man behind the legend and to explore what Lafayette might make of the country he helped shape.
-
Named in honor of Château de La Grange-Bléneau—the ancestral home of Lafayette’s wife, Adrienne—the city of LaGrange holds a distinctive place in American history. While the Marquis never walked this land, he remarked to Governor George Troup in 1825 that the area’s landscape reminded him of his wife's French estate. Three years later, the city was incorporated under that name. Today, An Evening with Lafayette brings that connection full circle, setting Lafayette’s 21st-century return right in the heart of LaGrange.

“Vlachos achieves something rare: he transports us to the past, then masterfully brings Lafayette forward to challenge our modern perspectives. The chapters where the General confronts our contemporary dilemmas are essential reading.”
